09.13.05 Linux
To Mainstream Countdown: 5 Years By
David Utter
Research firm Gartner thinks 2010 will see Linux reaching a point of acceptance
by the mass market.
It will take bulletproof reliability in the data center, but if Linux can reach
that level of maturity in five years, Gartner thinks it will have passed the corporate
acid test. The push from IBM and other firms, in addition to corporate support
options, will be the big factor.
ZDNet mentions Gartner's 'hype cycle' report, and while the server-side looks
promising, the desktop may be an uphill battle Linux can't win:
On the desktop, Linux is having a tougher time. Gartner claims the operating
system is reaching the point where the costs of migration may exceed the cost
benefits in a phase characterized by over-enthusiasm and unrealistic projections
which lead to more failures than successes.
Performance and security concerns will have to be addressed over the next five
years. When firms can rely on mission-critical applications being available and
safe on Linux, the cost savings it can offer will be a big factor for IT departments
evaluating it as a platform. Improvements in storage and system management by
the end of the year, as expected by Gartner, will also help.
