Google Analytics Slowing Down Websites

By Nathan Weinberg

Google recently updated some of the Javascript fetched every time a page using Google Analytics is loaded.

The new code is slowing down all matter of websites running Analytics. This WebMasterWorld thread (via Digg) has some angry site owners complaining about the slow-loading code preventing their pages from loading. Even Slashdot is suffering.

One poster pasted this message from Google:

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are aware that many users have experienced delays in their site due to a new update to the Google Analytics javascript file. Our engineers are currently working to resolve this issue. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.

If the issue is not resolved for you by Monday, please feel free to follow-up on this email, and I can give you an update on when a solution will be in place

I've noticed a lot of analytics software slowing down websites. Opera very specifically lists all the servers being contacted in the status area, so I'm always aware who's slowing down my blog, and others. If its a temporary thing, fine, I'll live, but if any analytics code becomes a consistent problem, I just drop it. Done it before, certainly. And I won't be the only one. There's no investment lost by dumping the free Google Analytics, and the QA people (if there are any) need to keep that in mind.

Cisco Buys IP Surveillance Company

By Jason L. Miller

Cisco Systems announced a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held SyPixx Networks, Inc. of Waterbury, Connecticut, for approximately $51 million in cash and options.

SyPixx Networks offers network-centric video surveillance software and hardware that enable existing analog video surveillance systems to operate as part of an open IP network.

Cisco says the acquisition will allow delivery of video surveillance as part of an "Intelligent Converged Environment.

Customers will be able to use their existing video surveillance systems and to integrate them into an overall physical security program. Video will be accessible at any time from any place, enabling real time incident response, investigation and resolution.

As a result of this acquisition, Cisco says it will pursue physical security as a new emerging technology. The deal is expected to close at the end of April.

"To address evolving security threats, a complete security system requires flexibility, reliability, and a platform upon which innovative new applications can be developed and deployed. With the Self Defending Network strategy, Cisco has already shown that an IP network can be a platform for helping to protect a company's information and digital assets," said Marthin De Beer, Vice President of Cisco's Emerging Market Technologies Group.
