04.21.08 Identity And Data Theft Update By Dan MorrillIf you are at the least bit interested in what is happening in the world of data theft and identity theft these are two must have resources in your favorite RSS reader. While the numbers might be depressing, this is information that will not be covered in the news on a regular basis, and if anything will slide under the radar of many of the bigger data collection systems like the Identity Theft resource center at the FTC. ![]() The Federal Trade Commission has a clearing house for Identity Theft resources, and things you can do personally that will help protect, deter, and defend against what is rapidly becoming an egregious issue rather than an isolated issue. This is heavily geared towards the customer, the everyday person who is living in the USA. For the average person this is a great site to go visit, and see what you can personally do. There are also a couple of tests that you can take to determine your "identity theft knowledge" that are also fun to take. ![]() The Attrition Data Loss Archive and Database is an open system that covers headlines that are reported in the commercial press, and can help people know when a system that they are a member of, a college, bank, or government institution has had a data loss happen to them. This under marketed and little known site can help folks know if some system or company that they interact with has been involved in a data loss that could lead to identity theft.
![]() The breach blog is another system that collects and posts information about systems that have been hacked, or data that has been lost. They also pull from many sources, but is more complete than the attrition blog, as well they have a standardized format that can be easily parsed and put into a database for later statistical modeling. While identity theft is a major issue right now, having knowledge of systems and companies that have their data breached can help someone figure out if they have been a victim of identity theft. The FTC site can help you pick up the pieces, but knowing if a system has been hacked is just as important. Since data breaches happen every day, the news papers and many web sites have pretty much so passed this kind of information by, these these resources can help everyone.
