Firefox 3 Worldwide Countdown

By Dan Morrill

If you have been playing around with the beta Firefox, today you can download the whole new package, and this is a download that is worth your time.

If this dedicated Microsoft fan boy can make the switch, this will not hurt a large segment of the population. The most amusing part is that some of the marketing bit sounds so much like Bill Gates talking about any number of Microsoft products, like this blurb from Web Monkey.

The open-source web browser is the fastest and most secure version of Firefox yet. Significant improvements have been made to the way it uses your computer's resources, so the memory leaks and other performance problems found in Firefox 2 have been stamped out. Text and image rendering have also been improved, and the underlying code for Gecko, the engine that draws the actual web pages on the screen, has been updated. There are also heaps of useful features that have been added for both power users and newcomers alike. Source: Web Monkey

Labnol has put out a "Download Clock" for the release as well, which is good, as the delivery of the product is what is seriously in question. While not everyone will upgrade right off the bat, there are enough people out there that want it, and could increase delivery times, so it looks like the folks at firefox have staggered when you can download it worldwide.

The firefox screen still shows version two, at 5 AM PST, have to see if it changes at 10 AM as proposed by Labnol's map.

I played with Beta one and liked it, having the full download of the new version today should be good to have. It will be interesting to see how well the program works with all the buzzers and bells that you can put on it via extensions. There are some good compelling extensions out there, and the idea of having a "stripped browser" that is just a browser, and then customizing it from there has some appeal. Most folks do not use a large amount of the software that they have to its full capacity. Shipping something streamlined makes sense.
