How Do You Feel About The Pirate Bay Verdict?

By Bruce Houghton

Reaction to the news Friday that the Pirate Bay Four had been convicted came from every corner of the web over the weekend:

"The verdict might well be altered on appeal, it might have been the result of political pressure, and it might be a very poor decision-such things will become clearer in time. But it's certainly not surprising. (ars)

"File sharing networks forced an industry notoriously set in its ways to acknowledge the enormous power of the internet to distribute music through social channels - if anything, increasing its odds of thriving during the inevitable social-media era.Lawsuits like this one against The Pirate Bay make sense on the surface. On another level, they're a funny way of saying, 'Thanks.' " (Eliot Van Buskirk on Wired's Epicenter)

"What's striking to me is the lack of an injunction ordering the defendants to shut down the site, unplug the servers, and otherwise cease their activities in aid of others' direct infringement." (Copyrights & Campaigns)

"I get it, it's the legal theory/precedent.  But wasn't that the rationale behind the Napster suits?  Establishing the law?  So now we've established the law in Sweden.  Where next, Afghanistan?  ...You can put a server anywhere...the only solution is new services that people want.  But this requires a change in headspace.  The rights holders must realize that the old business they used to love is kaput." (Lefstez)
