Recently, Advanced Micro Devices, chief competitor to Intel regarding microprocessors, has been in talks with Dell recently to start selling PCs featuring AMD processors.
However, these talks are going to remain just that, at least for the foreseeable future. After a flirtation with the idea of featuring AMD processors, Dell CEO Kevin Rollins told a number of financial analysts Dell would not be offering chips from Intel's rival anytime soon.
According to PCWorld.com, a delay in a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system allowed Intel time to catch up with AMDs chip architecture…
Although many AMD backers like to speculate that close relationships among Dell, Microsoft, and Intel led to the numerous delays, [Kevin Krewell, editor in chief of the Microprocessor Report] pointed out that Microsoft is notorious for releasing products far after their anticipated launch date.
AMD can take some consolation in the fact that Opteron chips are shipping from major server vendors such as Hewlett-Packard, Sun, and IBM, three companies that never would have given AMD a chance with its previous server chips, Krewell said. And AMD will have another window of opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities when it releases its first dual-core Opteron around the middle of this year, he said. Intel's dual-core Xeon chip isn't expected until 2006.
