1,700 businesses took part in a CompTIA survey concerning the hiring process of IT experts. The survey provided results which showed employers relying heavily on IT certifications, but also noted struggles regarding evaluation and validation.

CompTIA is a non-profit associate that deals specifically with the information technology industry. Tim Herbert, vice president, research, CompTIA states the importance of certifications, "From the employerÕs perspective, top benefits of IT certification are validation of an individualÕs ability to understand new or complex technologies, higher productivity and more insightful problem solving"

64% of IT hiring managers stated certifications were extremely high or high in value. 80% of these professionals believe certification will increase in importance in the next two years. So even if managers don't necessarily think certification is important, they believe it will become so in the future.

While professionals find certification important, they are also struggling with it. 44 percent of those surveyed find it difficult to verify a potential hire's credentials due to time involved, with 38 percent citing effort as a difficulty.

Herbert continues citing the importance of finding a good IT hire, "Now more than ever thereÕs little margin for error for making a bad hire"

"In an environment of needing to do more with less, organizations cannot afford the time and cost of bringing on a new employee who cannot contribute immediately."

Along with certification, experience, track record, and accomplishments were also ranked as important factors when looking for potential hires.

This information is important to both hiring managers and those looking to get into the IT field. Certification has been seen as an option in the past, but with the increasing upgrades in technology they are becoming a necessity.
